The Euryalus castle is located few miles from Syracuse, near the small village Belvedere. It's one of the most important remains of the ancient Greek town and among the best preserved fortresses of classic age, visible in the Mediterranean area. The Euryalus fortress was built by the tyrant Dionysius, together with the large Dionysian walls to defend the Epypolis plateau and Syracuse from the attacks of the enemies, particularly the Carthaginians, the sworn enemies of the Greeks. With our guided tour you will visit this archaeological site which dates back at the 4th century B.C. and you will discover the cunnings and tricks of the ancient military strategy. Our guide will introduce you to the geopolitical situation of ancient Syracuse and tell you about the wars against Athens and Carthago. Then you will visit the remains of the fortress, starting with the system of three moats which defended the main entrance. You will also enter into the largest one, passing near the towers which were used for war machines like catapults and ballistas. From the top of the fortress it's also possible to admire the scenery over the Epypolis plateau, Syracuse and the great harbour. You will then explore the undergrounds, hidden tunnels which permitted fast movements of Syracuse's army to defend the fortress. You will walk along the longest tunnel until its exit below the fortress, near one of the entrance gates to the town. During the visit the guide will tell you about the defensive and war tecniques of the ancient Greeks. The walking tour will end with the visit of the small antiquarium wich contains an exhibition of some of the archaeological findings and some models of the castle.
