The archaeological site of the Tellaro Villa is located in the southern part of the province of Syracuse, near Noto, the Vendicari nature reserve and the fisher village of Marzamemi. Here, in the typical Sicilian countryside, it's possible to see the remain of an ancient farmhouse which dates back to the 18-19th century. In the seventies, an illegal archaeological dig of an ancient Roman villa was discovered and blocked in this area. Archaeologist have digged, studied and restored a part of this large villa and in the year 2008 the Roman Tellaro Villa has opened to visitors. With this private tour you will discover this special archaeological site and its two levels dating back to different ages. In the lower level it's possible to see the remains of the ancient Roman Villa which likely covered an area of more than 3000 square meters. On the ruins of the villa, few centuries ago, a typical Sicilian farm was built. The Roman Villa dates back to the 4th century AD and nowadays it's famous for its mosaics, among the most beautiful discovered in Sicily. Our guide will tell you about the life in Sicily during the Roman empire, about the tecnique of the mosaics and about the various scenes in the Tellaro villa. The 'hunting scene' mosaic is a masterpiece which reminds a similar artwork in the Roman Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina. The large mosaic shows the various phases of the hunting of animals destined to the amphitheatres of the empire. Another beautiful mosaic represents the ramsom of Hector's body, the Trojan hero of the Iliad. The visit of the Tellaro villa lasts about 30 minutes therefore this itinerary is not bookable as single tour but only as part of a half day or full day tour, combined with one or more other itinearies in the same area.
