With this itinerary you will discover Ibla, the old town center of Ragusa, with a private guide. This tour is available for private groups or also for individual visitors, all around the year, choosing the preferred starting time and tailoring the itinerary. Since 2002, thanks to its impressive baroque architecture, Ibla is an Unesco world heritage site, part of the cultural town centers of the Noto valley. During this tour you will learn about the origins of Ragusa and about the terrible earthquake wich destroyed southeastern Sicily in the year 1693. You will visit the remains of portale San Giorgio, the St. George's gate, the last evidence of the ancient medieval cathedral. You will then walk through the pleasant Hyblaean gardens. From the look-out it's possible to enjoy the panorama of the Sicilian countryside. After the park, the guide will lead you through the town center, telling you about Sicilian baroque architecture but also about the local folklore and lifestyle. Ragusa Ibla has also been a film set for 'Inspector Montalbano', a famous Italian TV show based on the novels of Andrea Camilleri. In Ibla you will also visit the most important churches. The facades are built in white limestone and there is a beautiful contrast with some details realized with local dark pitchstone. Among the monuments you will visit the Benedictine St. Joseph's church and you will have a walk along the main street, surrounded by the ancient aristocratic buildings like Palazzo Donnafugata, Palazzo Arezzo Trifiletti and the 'circolo di conversazione', literally the conversation society. In Piazza Duomo you will visit the main church of Ibla, St. George's church. It was realized by the architect Rosario Gagliardi and is one of the most beautiful churches of the Noto valley. Inside it's possible to admire the ancient paintings, the organ and the statue of St. George which goes in procession through the town during the yearly religious feast. Near the church you will see palazzo La Rocca, famous for its baroque balconies with bizarre masks. The walking tour continues through the narrow street, passing near Palazzo Cosentini and ending at the church of Purgatory.
N.B. Small changes to the itinerary can occur according to your preferences or to the openings of the religious buildings. This tour can be booked as single itinerary or also as part of a tailored half day or full day tour which includes other highlights of Ragusa or surroudings.
