Scicli is a small town, in southeastern Sicily with a charming position, between the hills, canyons and seaside only few miles away. Scicli's town center offers to the visitors impressive views of the Sicilian baroque architecture of the 18th century. The town was rebuilt in this style after the disastrous earthquake of the year 1693 and since 2002 it's part of the Unesco world heritage sites of the Noto valley. This private walking tour with a licensed guide can be booked by groups, small parties, families or individual visitors. It's also possible to tailor the tour of the town center adding optional monuments, according to your interests or it's possible to book a half day or full day tour, including other itineraries in the surroundings. The visit starts in the central Piazza Italia and with the mother church devoted to San Guglielmo, St. William. A curious statue is housed in this church, the 'Madonna dei milici', a 'warrior Madonna' which rides a horse and crushes moor soldiers. The guide will tell you about the ancient local legend and about the yearly religious feast and procession. Around the town there are the 'cave', natural canyons where it's possible to admire some of the most beautiful churches of Scicli which where built between the 18th and 19th century by the various religious brotherhoods. Your guide will lead you to the San Bartolomeo (St. Bartholomew) church and then through the narrow streets and to Palazzo Beneventano where it's possible to see the bizzarre baroque mask on the facade. You will then move to Via Mormino Penna, the most famous street of Scicli. The guide will tell you about the history and architecture of the most famous 'palazzi' - the houses of the aristrocratic families - and churches like San Michele and San Giovanni. This part of the town is also famous because in the last twenty years it has often been a filming location for 'Inspector Montalbano', one of the most beloved TV shows in Italy, created by the author Andrea Camilleri and broadcasted also in many other countries around the world. During this tour you will discover more about the history, art and architecture in Sicily but the guide will tell you also about the Sicilian lifestyle, gastronomy and folklore.
N.B. The standard walking tour lasts about 1h30m. On request it's possible add some optional monuments like the formerly rocky district of 'Chiafura' (opening to visitors must be checked few days before the tour), the church of St. Matteo with it's panoramic viewpoint or the police office of Inspector Montalbano. If you have a specific interest for the TV show or the novels of Montalbano have a look also at our Montalbano tours page.
The itinerary described above can have some variations according to the seasonal opening times of the various churches.
