Treasures of Buccheri

Details
19 October 2024

The Treasures of Buccheri In recent years, beside the nmost famous tourist attractions, visitors have increasingly sought to rediscover the Italian "borghi", the small, quiet villages in the countryside, still far away from mass tourism and able to offer authentic experiences and flavors. In this context, the initiative "The Treasures of Buccheri," promoted by the small town in the province of Siracusa, fits perfectly. Buccheri is located at the foot of Monte Lauro, the highest point in the province of Siracusa, just a short distance from the Baroque town of Palazzolo Acreide and the open-air museum of Buscemi. It is a small town that offers visitors good restaurants, pleasant walks in the surrounding woods, views of traditional snow pits from which the tradition of Sicilian granita originates, and the remains of a medieval castle around which the Medfest takes place every August.

Below is the program sent by the tourist office regarding the event "The Treasures of Buccheri," which will take place on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October 2024. For more information, please contact the Municipality of Buccheri directly.

The Mount Alveria festival in ancient Noto

View of the Noto Antica castleMany people confuse the historical center of Noto, a UNESCO heritage site, with Noto Antica, ancient Noto thinking that the two names refer to the same place. Looking at a map of the province of Syracuse you will notice both names just a few kilometers apart. Noto is the town that is inhabited today and boasts a splendid Baroque historic center. Noto Antica, on the other hand, is the site of the ancient city of Noto, which was completely destroyed by the great earthquake of 1693. The town actually had very ancient origins, existing as early as the Greek period. Some scholars have even suggested that Noto was the tow founded by Ducezio, the leader who united the Sikels in a revolt against the Greeks. What is certain is that Noto flourished in ancient times and then in the Middle Ages on Mount Alveria, and the town was so severely damaged by the 1693 earthquake that it was decided to move it a few kilometers away. Since the 17th century, the site has been sparsely inhabited, and as a result, the entire area is an extraordinary archaeological site that deserves to be studied and promoted along with the splendid natural area of Cava Carosello, where ancient tanneries still stand.

An admirable effort to promote and raise awareness is continuously carried out by the ISVNA (Institute for the Study and Promotion of Noto Antica), which also organizes the annual "Festa dell'Alveria" to revitalize the ancient site.

Christmas 2023: monumental church openings in Ortigia

Details
20 December 2023
  • ortygia

Ortigia, the historic center of Syracuse, is the jewel of the city. It is a pleasure to stroll along the waterfront and even more to get lost in the narrow streets of Giudecca, Spirduta, or Graziella districts. There are also many churches of artistic interest in Ortigia, although only a part of them (in addition to the cathedral Santa Lucia alla Badia and San Pietro) are regularly accessible to visitors. During the Christmas holidays 2023, an event will allow visitors to explore some of these hidden gems or attend concerts inside them. The churches that will be accessible include the Church of San Martino, one of the oldest in Syracuse, which features a beautiful medieval altarpiece; the Church of San Giuseppe, commissioned by the carpenters' brotherhood and located in the square of the same name; and the Church of San Benedetto, in Baroque style, which now hosts celebrations of the Romanian Orthodox rite.

The three churches will be open for guided tours with a suggested donation on:

December 23, 24, 25, and 26, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Additionally, two concerts are scheduled in the Church of San Giuseppe:

  • December 23, at 8:00 PM: Cantunovu
  • December 30, at 8:00 PM: Coro Ad Dei Laudem

These initiatives are for charitable purposes, and the proceeds will be donated to healthcare initiatives in South Sudan. The openings are organized by the Parish of San Martino Vescovo, which can be contacted for further information.
